Peek inside a Thai prison

Of all prisons in Thailand, Bangkwang Central just outside Bangkok is the most notorious. Housed here are death row inmates, lifers and other inmates with 25 years or more.

Looks like both of these video clips were illegally shot by a foreign prisoner on his cellphone and then uploaded onto youtube. These days with smartphones connected to the internet, some prisoners chat with their girlfriends on MSN and Facebook. Of course, officially the prisoners are not allowed to have cellphones, but if you have money, you can buy just about anything in prison.

In the mid 90′s I spent a little over 6 weeks in the prison at MaeHongSon. Arrested for drugs I was not an addict and although conditions were harder than in an Australian prison(7 months in 1980)the behaviour of the men and the nature of the prison were remarkable. I have taken their models of behaviour, especially the Salars, as an inspiration for nearly 20 years. These were real men. Unfortunately the prison has been replaced by a new one near Soppong which makes me truly fortunate to have experienced justice without a vicious contempt. Farang are priveledged and I heard of viciousness and conempt especially to illegals from Myanmar, the most unfortunate of all.
