New Year’s Party in a Thai Prison

December 14, 2011

New Year is a chance for Thai prisoners to have some fun. Although they won’t be able to take part in any Countdown celebrations or drink and get merry, they do get an opportunity to have some fun and games during the day. These pictures were taken at the end of 2010 in Chumporn Provincial Prison. As you can see, some of the games include piggy-back races and musical chairs. Probably the same games that they played when they were at school. However, they don’t seem to mind.

Aren’t they in prison for a reason?

Maybe you don’t realise, but there are quite a few prisoners that haven’t actually been sentenced yet. Many cannot afford to pay for bail and they could be waiting in prison for up to a year for their court date. Others may have been fined but couldn’t pay it so have to serve time. You may think it is all fun in a Thai prison, but any luxury they get here is far removed from the personal cells that they often have in Europe and America. Anyway, better to keep their minds active with organized events.

If you are planning on flying to Thailand for a holiday, we advise that you don't deal with drugs of any sorts. A night or two in one of these hotels is far better than your entire life in a Thai prison:
