Phuket has introduced a plan to build a new prison costing one billion baht to provide better conditions for inmates.

Located on a 108-rai plot in Thalang district, the new prison is intended to solve overcrowding, which increases tensions among inmates and staff.

Prison commander Rapin Nichanont said the existing facility was more than 100 years old and in sorry state.

Located on a 47-rai plot in Muang district, the facility currently houses 1,600 inmates, both men and women, exceeding its maximum capacity.

He said that seven to eight inmates are forced to share single cells, which has a negative impact on them.

According to Mr Rapin, the new prison would be designed to provide better conditions and treatment with capacity of 3,000 inmates.

After the new prison opens, the old one would be turned into a government centre, he said.
