Prison inmates have so far dredged canals in nine locations of Bangkok, Corrections Department deputy chief Kobkiat Kasivivat said on Monday.

Canals from the Criminal Court on Ratchadapisek Road to Phahon Yothin police station had been dredged by  well-behaved inmates selected by the Corrections Department, he said.

“If the Metropolitan Police Bureau finds canals that need to be scoured it can coordinate with the Corrections Department and we’ll get inmates to do the job immediately,” Mr Kobkiat said.

The department said it had 1,000 inmates ready to help the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) drain the water during heavy rain.
