A South African woman has been arrested at Bangkok airport attempting to smuggle 2kg (4.4 pounds) of crystal methamphetamine, Thai police said Wednesday.

Narcotics police acting on a tip-off stopped Adelina Ntshebleng Lephutha Ononiwu, 31, at Suvarnabhumi Airport on Monday after she arrived from the Kenyan capital and was waiting for an onward flight to Cambodia.

Police found the drugs also known as “ice” in three bags hidden in a secret compartment in her luggage, they said. The haul has a street value of $80,000 in Thailand.

“She said she was hired by a Nigerian man to deliver the luggage to Phnom Penh,” Colonel Pornchai Charoenwong of the Narcotic Suppression Bureau said.

“He paid her 24,000 baht ($760) and said she will get a further 200,000 baht when the job was completed,” he said, adding she started her journey in Benin, West Africa.

Ononiwu was charged with drug trafficking, which carries a death sentence in Thailand, although executions are rarely sanctioned.

On Monday Nolubabalo “Babsie” Nobanda was sentenced to 15 years in Thailand for smuggling cocaine in her dreadlocks.

Nobanda was also fined R250,000.

“Initially, she was given a 30-year sentence but that term was reduced because she was co-operative with the authorities.

They reduced the jail sentence by half,” said International Relations spokesman Clayson Monyela.

I don’t know whether she was a fool or she thought she was brave, Babsie’s situation was a wake up call to everyone to stay away from Nigerians and drugs. How could she be so stupid? We are having sleepless nights thinking about them but they go on to do the very same thing that endangers their lives.

I think south africans should just stay away from these nigerians I mean we felt bad about the xenophobia issue and we gave them another chance and all they are doing is to destroy our sisters mostly. Its high time we took a stand and say NO, and to stop hanging around with these nigerians they are barbaeric so they should be treated as barberians nxa they ar just not human and I bet you they are the very people who tip the police off because that certain individual did not BEHAVE and they will just revenge in this manner. I’m trully disgusted by their behave. For all the sisters of S A doing time in foreign countries because of drugs our prayers are with you and let your mistakes be a wake up call to other up and coming young not to be lured into such acts because of money. Earn money the old fashionable way I assure you, u will not end up in jail
