About 10,000 prisoners throughout the country will be released tomorrow, Aug 16, under a royal pardon on the occasion of Her Majesty the Queen’s 80th birthday on Aug 12 and His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn’s 60th birthday on July 28, Corrections Department chief Suchart Wong-ananchai said on Wednesday.

Pol Col Suchart said the 10,000 prisoners who are entitled to be freed immediately will include 1,600 who will be released from 15 prisons in Bangkok and nearby provinces.  The others will be released from 143 prisons throughout the country.

In Bangkok, Justice Minister Pracha Promnok will preside over a ceremony to release pardoned inmates in front of Klong Prem Prison at 9am.

Those released will be given 500 baht each for travelling back home.

Apart from the 10,000, about 20,000 other convicts will also be released later after their remaining time to serve in prison has been reduced under the royal pardon.
