A prisoner's head was squeezed tightly in this instrument of torture. If you look closely, you will see a knot in the wood next to his temple. As the string was tightened at one end, this knot of wood would dig into his head. Very painful but popular method to get people to confess. This was abolished by the penal code in 1908.
